See You After Quarantine?
Taiwanese BL
10 episodes ~15 minutes each
Fully translated into English on Viki
Spoilers Below
Today I finished watching the Taiwanese BL drama 'See You After Quarantine?' which was a cute, short little drama about a Taiwanese student, Chen Bo Chun, who recieves a message in Japanese from a stranger talking about a rare vintage camera Bo Chun has been trying to buy. This stranger is Sato Itsuki, who bought to camera to give to his ex as an apology for breaking his. They end up video calling during Sato Itsuki's quarantine after entering Taiwan for work and the two of them end up falling in love.
The episodes were really short, delicious little bitesized pieces, which was nice for my attention span. I definitely wanted more slice of life adventures but the story was told well and the cute montage at the end definitely made for a sweet send off.
The actors for Chen Bo Chun's friends were definitely more awkward than Sato Itsuki's, but given that Bo Chun's friends are supposed to be university age I assume they were less experienced actors. Plus Itsuki's friends include Aaron Lai, who I adore, so I was already biased towards them.
I really loved that Itsuki had gay friends, I feel like I watch a lot of stuff where there's 1 or 2 individual queer people but they don't have any real community aside from their love interest. Watching a cute little romance where 3 gay dudes are friends and tease each other and support each other and help each other out? Beautiful!
The video quality is variable, because it was shot on smartphones, but I actually think that adds to the vibe. Sometimes I watch stuff and people have like 4k webcams and it's very silly!
Obviously, they do mention Covid. Bo Chun has to have an online graduation and he and his friends complain about it. Itsuki has to quarantine after entering the country. Bo Chun has to quarantine too later because someone in his building is Covid positive. At one point he gets a fever and Itsuki stays on video call with him while he sleeps which is so cute but his PCR test returns negative.
All in all it's very sweet. It's not too long and nothing much important happens, but sometimes that's exactly what you want in a drama.
