Today I finished 2 dramas because the final episode of one I've been keeping up with came out and I binged a short one. I'm going to post my review of Color Rush tomorrow because I spent ages typing one up and then lost it all due to poor html skills so I'm sad about it.
Be Loved In House: I Do
13 Eps
Taiwanese
Modern BL with Boss/Employee romance.
This drama is inspired, I think, by the first ever Taiwanese drama I watched back in like 2016 or something called 'Just You'. The basic premise is that the main character works at a small company that is getting a new boss. Also, two of their colleagues are planning to get engaged. The new boss arrives and institutes a new rule, no one who works for him can date. People who are married must quit. To add insult to injury, the boss also moves into the main characters house. In Just You the boss tries to kick the main character out but she paid several months rent in advance and so refuses to leave. In BLIH, the boss only kicks out the main character's intern. Either way, MC and Boss end up living together and try to get the boss to take down the single rule so their friends can get married. Jin Yuzhen and Shi Lei, the BLIH couple, have MAJOR chemistry, but I wouldn't recommend it if you find shitty bosses annoying because Jin Yuzhen is very annoying in the first few eps.
I really enjoyed it and I would recommend it to anyone who enjoys silly romances that are also gay, but it's a bit rough around the edges and could have benefited from a little bit more budget.
I liked a lot of BLIH. I really enjoy the tropes used and the later episodes have some really great editing (to make up for the really kinda shitty editing of the first couple episodes). Jin Yuzhen and Shi Lei have SIZZLING chemistry and Siqi and Zhaogang (one of the side couples) are really cute. I do have some things I didn't enjoy but let's start with the things I did enjoy.
After the first couple episodes the editing got much better. There's a montage in like ep 9 or something that I legitimately think is one of the best sequences of TV I've watched in a while. I also really enjoyed most of the jealousy plotline, basically up until the epilogue episode. I found a lot of the character development to be really well paced, though I think in the last couple episodes the pacing was too rushed and would have benefitted from something else being cut or a few extra episodes to have some more breathing room.
I also really enjoyed Shi Lei's coming out scene. It was really nice to see a parent immediately declare not only that they loved their child no matter what but that they also approved of their child's choice of partner and without looking shocked or uncomfortable. Like, in many ways it was kinda stereotypical, but I really liked it, I liked the comfort of knowing Shi Lei didn't have to cut off his mum or know she disapproved of him. As much as tragedy is emotional, sometimes you just want to be comforted.
I will say that I was kinda disappointed with the epilogue episode. It was interesting to see Jin Yuzhen and Yi Zitong's backstory, but it felt weird to have this cute montage of them together after we had Shi Lei and Jin Yuzhen get together, yanno? It feels like the content from this episode should have gone earlier in the series, when Yi Zitong returned for example, rather than at the end. I know that originally they were going to have 12 episodes rather than 13, so I assume it was hastily cut together from things that were cut but I think it would have been more cathartic to have Jin Yuzhen watch it and then realise he's put it all behind him, that Shi Lei is his future and he doesn't love Zitong any more. I might fic it, who knows, but I think it would have worked better that way. That being said, it was pretty cathartic to see Yi Zitong and Jin Yuzhen's relationship falling apart and seeing Jin Yuzhen realise that Zitong was never going to stay.
I also think it's wild that Jin Yuzhen doesn't just tell people he has a nickel allergy? The whole shop thinks he's a dick with some vendetta against nickel, I don't know if he ever tells anyone aside from Shi Lei? He's so bad at communicating xD He's a disaster though, like, he says he falls in love with Shi Lei when he sees his dick, but there's a whole flashback about how Shi Lei gives him a flyer about the shop that's never mentioned again? I think this whole show needed more attention on the editing tbh.
All this being said, the like 10 minute long makeout/fade to black sex scene in the 12th ep? So hot! They're so desperate for each other and the emotional release is Very Good. Like Shi Lei has been waiting for Jin Yuzhen to get on board since like... episode 7? He has been very patient and he deserves a Very Desperate Jin Yuzhen in his bed.
